Request inclusion of a syllabus statement

THE SYLLABUS COMMITTEE…

…carefully reviews requests for possible additions to required or recommended course and university syllabus elements. The review process is intended to provide greater clarity and access for a significant portion of the campus and/or university population.

Requests must be received by February 1 for possible inclusion at the beginning of the following academic year. The committee needs adequate time to review the request and notify faculty and other stakeholders of changes to syllabus policy before the end of the current academic year.

ANATOMY OF A SYLLABUS

The syllabus committee uses the following distinctions when reviewing requests for inclusion of statements:

Course syllabus: the part of a syllabus that includes elements specific to the course, such as course title, course description, # credit hours, required materials, learning outcomes, assignment descriptions, expectations for student effort, statement on academic integrity, and schedules of assignments, readings, and class activities. These elements may be either required or recommended, and pertain directly to the course itself.

University syllabus: the part of a syllabus that includes university- and/or campus-wide information and policies, such as statements on religious accommodation, safety and emergency notifications, and reasonable accommodations. These elements tend to vary little from course to course. These elements typically do not pertain directly to the specifics of the course itself.

REVIEW PROCEDURES

Once a request is received, the syllabus committee will review and make one of the following recommendations:

  • That the statement be required in the course syllabus.
  • That the statement be recommended but not required in the course syllabus.
  • That the statement be required in the university syllabus.
  • That the statement be recommended but not required in the university syllabus.
  • That the statement be referred to an appropriate university organization (e.g. Student Affairs) for action.
  • That no action be taken.
